Paint Brand Converter: Find the Same Color in Another Brand
Switching brands, or your usual tube is out of stock? Pick a paint and a brand, and Chromilla finds its match. Paints are matched by pigment first, using the Colour Index code printed on the tube, and by color second, so you know whether the substitute will actually mix the same way.
Pick a paint to see its match.
How matching works
- Same pigment: the other paint lists exactly the same Colour Index codes. This is the closest substitute you can buy.
- Same main pigment: the other paint contains the main pigment of yours, plus or minus something else.
- Closest color, different pigment: no pigment match exists, so Chromilla shows the paint whose masstone looks closest. It will mix differently.

Questions
Are two paints with the same pigment code identical?
Not quite. The Colour Index code names the pigment, but each maker grinds it differently, uses its own binder and filler, and sources pigment of different particle size. Two paints with the same code mix in a very similar way, yet one can lean warmer or be more transparent than the other.
What if there is no exact pigment match?
The converter first looks for a paint that shares the main pigment. If there is none, it shows the paint whose masstone color is closest. That paint looks similar out of the tube but uses a different pigment, so it will mix differently, especially in tints and with other colors.
Can I convert between acrylic and oil?
Yes. Pigment codes work across media, so a PB29 ultramarine is the same pigment in acrylic, oil or watercolor. Handling, drying time and the color shift as paint dries all differ between media, so expect the dried result to look a little different.
