Mixing guide

What colours make orange: warm, peach, burnt and rust

Orange is yellow plus red. The cleanest orange comes from a warm yellow and a warm red (both already leaning toward each other). Below are the core orange mixes, the pastels and shadow versions, and the earth-leaning oranges painters reach for in landscape and skin.

The core yellow plus red oranges

Both tubes should lean warm. A cool red (Alizarin) plus a cool yellow (Lemon) drifts toward brown instead of orange because they meet through grey.

Why your orange goes brown

If yellow plus red gives you brown instead of orange, one of the two tubes is leaning toward blue. Alizarin Crimson and Quinacridone Rose both have a cool, blue bias, so they pull the mix toward grey-brown. Swap to Cadmium Red Light, Pyrrole Red or Vermilion for clean oranges. Also watch ratio: orange wants more yellow than red, roughly 2 to 1, because red is the stronger tinter.

Frequently asked questions

What two colours make a clean orange?
A warm yellow (Cadmium Yellow or Hansa Yellow Medium) plus a warm red (Cadmium Red Light or Pyrrole Red). Both tubes lean toward each other, so the mix stays high in chroma. Cool reds like Alizarin produce muddy orange-browns.
How do I make orange without cadmium?
Hansa Yellow Medium plus Pyrrole Red Light gives a near-identical clean orange with no cadmium. For an earthier orange, Yellow Ochre plus Cadmium Red Light is a solid cadmium-light alternative.
Why does my peach look chalky?
Titanium White is opaque and slightly cool, so it desaturates orange fast. Re-tint with a small dot of Cadmium Yellow to push the warmth back, or use Zinc White for a softer, less chalky lift.
