Watercolor: dilution is not the same as mixing
Water moves a watercolour wash up and down in value. It does not change which hue you mixed. If a wash is the wrong colour rather than the wrong strength, more water will not rescue it, and the ratio between your pigments is the only lever that will.
Two controls, two jobs
A watercolour wash has a pigment ratio and a pigment load. The ratio decides hue and neutrality: three parts viridian to one part burnt sienna is a specific green whether you float it pale or lay it in dark. The load, meaning how much water rides with it, decides value and how much paper shows through. Painters who feel stuck usually reach for the wrong control, thinning a wash that is the wrong hue or restirring a wash that is simply too strong.
- Wrong colour: change the ratio.
- Right colour, too dark or too weak: change the water.
- Both wrong: fix the ratio at working strength first, then dilute.
Worked example: sap green in watercolour
Target #4B6A2A. Chromilla's watercolour solve returns Viridian 83 per cent, Burnt Sienna 17 per cent, landing at #4C6930, delta E 1.4, a 96 per cent match. Those two numbers describe the hue and nothing else. Lay that same 83/17 ratio down thinly and you get a pale, slightly grey green; lay it down at full load and you get the deep foliage colour. Change it to 70/30 and you no longer have sap green at any dilution, you have a warm khaki.

Where white goes, and where it does not
In watercolour the paper is the white, so Chromilla mostly keeps titanium white out of the recipe and reaches for dilution instead. It is not absolute. For target #3F4C5B, a Payne's grey, the watercolour solve returns Ultramarine Blue 77 per cent, Titanium White 13 per cent, Burnt Sienna 10 per cent at 97 per cent match, because a small opaque load is what makes that particular grey read as body colour rather than a thin blue wash. If you paint transparent only, drop the white and float the same blue and sienna thinner.
What Chromilla cannot do here
Chromilla returns a ratio, not a water quantity. It has no way to see your paper, your brush load or how wet the sheet already is, and those three decide the final value more than anything in the recipe. The dry-down model carries an 8 per cent value shift for watercolour with a slight cool nudge, but granulation, blooms and lifting are not modelled at all.

- Does adding water change the colour of a watercolour mix?
- It changes the value and the opacity, not the hue. A diluted wash is the same colour laid thinner, so more paper shows through and it reads lighter.
- Why does my wash dry lighter than it looked?
- Some pigment settles and some binder clears. Chromilla models watercolour dry-down at 8 per cent of value with a faint cool shift, so mix a touch stronger than the target reads wet.
- Should I use white in watercolour?
- Usually not. Chromilla reaches for dilution first and only brings white in where the target needs an opaque body colour, as in the Payne's grey example above.
