Colour theory

Tertiary colours, with the ratios that actually get you there.

A tertiary colour sits between a primary and the secondary next to it: amber, vermilion, magenta, indigo, teal, chartreuse. The textbook says mix them in equal parts. Real pigments have very different strengths, so equal parts usually overshoots. Each ratio below is the one that lands on the hue.

The six tertiaries

Yellow orange (amber)

yellow + orange

75% Cadmium Yellow + 25% Cadmium Red = #F25212

Keep the red low. A quarter is already enough to swing yellow well past lemon.

Red orange (vermilion)

red + orange

72% Cadmium Red + 28% Cadmium Yellow = #E93318

Warm red. Use a warm red base, since a crimson base gives you a muddier result.

Red violet (magenta)

red + violet

70% Alizarin Crimson + 30% Dioxazine Violet = #501226

A cool red carries into violet cleanly. Cadmium red will not, it greys instead.

Blue violet (indigo)

blue + violet

65% Ultramarine Blue + 35% Dioxazine Violet = #251D60

Ultramarine already leans red, so it needs very little violet to get there.

Blue green (teal)

blue + green

60% Phthalo Blue + 40% Phthalo Green = #082C3C

Both pigments are very strong. Mix small and add white to judge the hue.

Yellow green (chartreuse)

yellow + green

82% Cadmium Yellow + 18% Phthalo Green = #66C210

Phthalo green overwhelms yellow fast. Under a fifth keeps it fresh rather than acid.

Getting them clean

Two tubes, not three. Every extra pigment in a tertiary drags chroma down. If a mix looks muddy, the usual cause is a third tube you did not need.

Bias decides the outcome. Red violet works from a cool red and fails from a warm one. Which tube leans where is covered in the warm and cool colours guide.

Judge in a tint. Strong pigments look near black at full strength. Pull a small amount into white to see the hue before you commit the mix.
