The oldest accuracy trick in drawing
Grid drawing: draw any photo accurately, one square at a time.
A grid shrinks a hard drawing problem into many easy ones. Add square cells to your photo, draw the same grid on your canvas, and copy what you see square by square. Chromilla's free grid drawing tool sizes the grid to your real canvas and can turn the photo into clean sketch lines to draw from.
How to do grid drawing
Load your photo
Open the grid drawing tool and drop in any reference photo. Nothing is uploaded; the photo stays on your device.
Size the grid to your canvas
Enter your real canvas size in inches or cm. The cells stay square, so one square on screen is one square on the canvas.
Draw the same grid on your canvas
Use a light pencil and the labeled rows and columns to copy the grid. Keep the lines faint so they disappear under paint.
Flip on Sketch for clean lines
The Sketch switch turns the photo into clean dark lines on a cream background: the subject outline and the edges between the big shapes, with no shading or texture.
Copy one square at a time
Work square by square, matching what you see in each cell instead of drawing the whole scene at once. Tap any square to focus it.
Check values, then paint
Send the photo to Value Study to plan the light, middle and dark zones, then mix each zone with your own tubes.
Why the grid method works
Your brain is good at recognizing faces and objects, and that is exactly the problem: it draws what it knows instead of what it sees. A grid breaks the scene into anonymous shapes, so you judge angles, distances and proportions on their own merits. Artists have used the method since the Renaissance to transfer and enlarge drawings, and it remains the fastest way to train accurate measuring.
When the drawing is blocked in, the same photo carries you further: Value Study plans the light, middle and dark zones, and each zone mixes with the paint tubes you already own.
Questions about grid drawing
- What is a grid drawing tool?
- A grid drawing tool overlays square cells on a reference photo so you can copy it one square at a time. Chromilla's version sizes the grid to your real canvas, labels the rows and columns like a map, and can turn the photo into clean sketch lines to draw from.
- How do I do grid drawing?
- Add a grid to your photo, draw the same grid lightly on your canvas, then copy what you see square by square. Matching one small square at a time is far easier than judging the whole scene at once, which is why the method has been used for centuries.
- Is the grid method cheating?
- No. Artists from the Renaissance onward have used grids to transfer and enlarge drawings accurately. It trains your eye to judge proportion, and most artists need it less and less as their measuring improves.
- Can I do grid drawing with sketch lines?
- Yes. Grid Drawing has a Sketch switch that turns your photo into clean dark lines on a cream background: the subject outline and the edges between the big shapes, with no shading or texture. The red grid stays on top, so you can block in the drawing square by square before you paint.
- Is the grid drawing tool free?
- Yes. Loading a photo, sizing the grid, Sketch mode and tapping squares are all free. Chromilla Pro adds printing the grid at full canvas size.
